Ho appena aggiornato da Debian 8 a 9.
Apparentemente, interrompe tutto ciò che riguarda il database. Ora non riesco ad avviare MySQL, l'errore è:

Esegui /etc/init.d/mysql start risultati:

Non riesco a trovare un file chiamato mysql.err e ps -aux|grep -i maria non produce alcun risultato.

Per qualche motivo non hai il file /etc/mysql/debian-start , che è l'errore dato:

Ho controllato la mia installazione di mariadb e quel file fa parte di mariadb-server-10.1 pacchetto. Controlla se è presente /etc/mysql/debian-start.dpkg-dist o simili, in tal caso rinominalo in /etc/mysql/debian-start .
Altrimenti, controlla quale nome esatto del pacchetto hai installato:
dpkg -S /usr/bin/mysqld_safe
mariadb-server-10.1: /usr/bin/mysqld_safe
Scarica il pacchetto .deb (es. tramite questa pagina), scompattalo:
dpkg-deb --extract mariadb-server-10.1_10.1.26-0+deb9u1_amd64.deb /tmp/mariadb-server
(sostituisci il nome del file che hai scaricato) e poi copia il file:
cp /tmp/mariadb-server/etc/mysql/debian-start /etc/mysql/
Dovresti quindi essere in grado di avviarlo; a meno che non ci siano più file mancanti. È strano che questo file manchi, quindi qualcosa è andato storto a un certo punto.
