Di recente ho eseguito l'aggiornamento da 16.04 a 18.04.4 LTS e ora desidero eseguire nuovamente l'aggiornamento a 20.04 LTS utilizzando
sudo do-release-upgrade -d
Il processo non riesce con un messaggio di errore su ppas, ma i file di registro mostrano che il problema ha a che fare con ubuntu-standard e lsof conflitti. Sembra che non possa risolvere il conflitto tra lsof:amd e lsof:i386. Ho provato a rimuoverli e reinstallarli, ma non ha ancora funzionato.
C'è qualcosa che posso fare o devo aspettare e sperare che venga risolto dai manutentori del pacchetto?

Ho anche provato a eseguire l'aggiornamento a 19.10 come passaggio intermedio, ma questo stesso problema lsof lo sta bloccando.

Con l'aiuto di N0rbert, ho determinato che il problema con il mio aggiornamento era rappresentato dai vecchi pacchetti i386 insieme alla mia installazione di amd64. Ho provato diversi modi per rimuovere questa architettura come suggerito cercando su Internet. Tutti hanno fallito con problemi di dipendenza fino a quando non mi sono imbattuto in questa risposta di PythoNic. Anche il suo suggerimento che aptitude è meglio di apt-get era corretto. apt-get ha fallito anche con problemi di dipendenza.
# install aptitude if you don't already have it
sudo apt-get install aptitude
# get rid of all the :i386 versions of packages
# apt-get failed on this, but aptitude suggested a way to do it
sudo aptitude purge `dpkg --get-selections | grep ":i386" | awk '{print $1}'`
